Rudrapur is a major industrial city and the administrative headquarters of Udham Singh Nagar district in the Kumaon region of Uttarakhand, India. History of Rudrapur
Rudrapur has a rich historical heritage dating back to the 16th century. It was founded around 1588 AD by King Rudra Chand (reigned 1565–1597), a distinguished monarch of the Chand Dynasty of Kumaon. Mughal Emperor Akbar granted the fertile southern Terai region to King Rudra Chand, who established Rudrapur as a strategic military post and administrative center to protect Kumaon's southern frontiers.
The name Rudrapur is derived directly from King Rudra Chand. Historically a dense and marshy forest region, Rudrapur witnessed massive development following the post-1948 rehabilitation of refugees after the Partition of India. Over the decades, hard-working farming communities turned the fertile Terai soil into one of North India's most productive agricultural belts.
In the early 2000s, with the creation of Uttarakhand as a separate state and the subsequent establishment of the SIDCUL industrial estate, Rudrapur evolved into a modern metropolis combining industrial dynamism with agricultural excellence.
